Hymn Text: The Greater Debt

Date: November 10th, 2017
Title: The Greater Debt
Meter: 10 10 10 10
Topic: forgiveness, mercy, service

We owe a debt 10,000 talents high,
But we do not have the means to supply,
The payment, for it is too great to earn.
And soon will come the day of its return.

We owe a debt that will put us in chains,
Where we will stay until no debt remains.
We fall and beg for mercy of the king.
And bring to him what little we can bring.

Our neighbor has a debt: a hundred pence.
If we demand, we set aside all sense.
The greater debt the king will then forgive,
If we allow our debtors, too, to live.
